Driving in Azerbaijan

Let me start by saying that the views espoused are my own, and not meant to offend anyone of any religious persuasion, be they Catholic, Baptist, Muslim, or none of the above.

Born and raised a Roman Catholic, I dutifully went through many years of catechism, and received the sacraments of baptism, first communion, first confession, and confirmation. Then, as so many of us do, I lapsed from church attendance, and have only attended Mass sporadically in the last several years. I dislike the modern services that so many churches have embraced, with clanging guitars, and endless singing (I should add that I love crashing guitars where they belong – in rock music. They do not belong in church.)

Our trip to Tbilisi

Chapter 1

In which the train adventure begins.

Newly arrived at post, my daughter Briana and I decided to make a quick trip across the border and into Georgia to visit some family and friends. Normally I would not have considered such a venture so soon, given the fact that I was still learning my way around the new job, and trying to put my new house into some sense of order. But there was a time constraint I was unable to work around. One of my Georgian daughters Thako (a former FLEX foreign exchange student we had hosted in our home in Northern Virginia from August 2007-June 2008) was back in Georgia for a few short days with her six month old baby boy Luka (my first quasi grandchild) before returning to her new home in Greece (where she had moved with her new husband after being married last year).
